DS or DJ2? Two SMC-Compatible Cylinder Families, Two Different Installation Sizes

Looking for a drop-in alternative to an SMC round or compact cylinder? HINAKA offers two separate, installation-compatible families — DS and DJ2 — and it is easy to reach for the wrong one. Here is the difference.

I. Compatible With Two Different SMC Series

DS and DJ2 are both installation-size-compatible with SMC cylinders, but not the same SMC series:

• DS is compatible with SMC's CM2 series — the round-body cylinder line.
• DJ2 is compatible with SMC's CQ2 series — the compact cylinder line.

Matching the wrong series to your existing mounting means the installation dimensions will not line up, even though both are "SMC-compatible" cylinders.

II. DS — Round-Body, CM2-Compatible

• Bore ø20 to ø40, operating pressure 0.1 to 0.8 MPa, maximum 1 MPa.
• SUS304 tube, riveted front and rear covers, adjustable end cushions.
• Standard (DSA/DSC/DSS), buffer-adjustable (DSD) and adjustable-buffer (DSDE) variants.

III. DJ2 — Compact, CQ2-Compatible

• Bore ø12 to ø200 — a far wider bore range than DS.
• Operating pressure 0.098 to 0.97 MPa, speed 50 to 1,000 mm/s.
• Anodised aluminium tube, embedded magnetic switch; double-rod, guided, tandem and multi-position variants available.

IV. Quick Decision Guide

• Replacing or matching an SMC CM2: choose DS.
• Replacing or matching an SMC CQ2, or need a wider bore range or a rod variant (double rod, guided, tandem): choose DJ2.
